Product Description

LOCTITE EA 9394.3 AERO is a two-part structural epoxy paste adhesive that cures at room temperature and is formulated for bonded assemblies requiring controlled bondline thickness and elevated-temperature performance. Its thixotropic, gap-filling consistency supports structural bonding, potting, filling and liquid-shim work, while 5 mil glass beads help control the bondline. The mixed adhesive has a typical 90-minute pot life at 25°C for a 450 g mass. Typical ASTM D1002 lap-shear testing on phosphoric-acid-anodized 2024-T3 aluminum shows 4,200 psi at 25°C and 1,200 psi at 177°C.

Key features

  • Elevated-temperature lap shear: Typical tensile lap shear is 1,200 psi (8.3 MPa) at 177°C under the stated aluminum test configuration.
  • Controlled bondline: The formulation contains 5 mil glass beads to help establish bondline thickness.
  • Extended pot life: Typical pot life is 90 minutes at 25°C for a 450 g mixed mass.
  • Room-temperature or accelerated cure: Cure for 3–5 days at 25°C, or use 1 hour at 66°C for complete cure; accelerated cure is limited to small masses.
  • Thixotropic gap filling: The paste consistency supports potting, filling and liquid-shim applications.

Processing

Mixing, application and cure

Process control is important for ratio accuracy, mixed-mass temperature, bondline formation and cure development. Keep working-time, handling-strength and full-cure stages distinct when planning assembly loads.

Mix ratio: Combine Part A and Part B at 100:17 by weight and mix thoroughly. Volume measurement is not recommended for structural applications unless the ratio is controlled by special precautions.
Batch size and pot life: Typical pot life is 90 minutes at 25°C for a 450 g mass. Do not mix more than 450 g because larger mixed masses can generate hazardous exotherm and toxic fumes.
Surface preparation and assembly: Use clean, dry and properly prepared bonding surfaces. Apply the mixed adhesive, assemble the parts and maintain contact or support until the adhesive has set.
Handling strength: Handling strength develops after 24 hours at 25°C. Support tooling or pressure may then be removed, but full bond strength has not yet developed and applied loads should remain small.
Cure: Cure for 3–5 days at 25°C for normal performance. For small masses, accelerated cure may be used up to 93°C; 1 hour at 66°C provides complete cure.
Storage and Handling

Store Part A and Part B below 25°C; the stated shelf life is 1 year for each component. Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated location away from incompatible materials. Components should be near 25°C before mixing. Use appropriate ventilation and protective equipment, and do not heat unmixed Part A above 80°C or Part B above 100°C.

Environmental exposure and peel performance

The following results provide additional context for tensile lap shear after liquid exposure and for bell peel on prepared aluminum. They apply only to the stated specimens, conditioning and test methods.

Lap shear after 7-day liquid exposure
Typical tensile lap shear at 25°C was 4,100 psi (28.3 MPa) after water exposure, 4,000 psi (27.6 MPa) after isopropyl alcohol, 4,100 psi (28.3 MPa) after hydraulic oil and 4,200 psi (29.0 MPa) after JP-4 fuel. The room-temperature control was 4,300 psi (29.7 MPa).
Each exposure was 7 days at 25°C; results were tested at 25°C.
Bell peel and defined service temperature
Typical bell peel strength is 20 pli at 25°C. The defined service temperature is 177°C, based on retention of 1,000 psi (6.9 MPa) tensile lap shear using ASTM D1002.
Bell peel: ASTM D3167 after 7 days at 25°C on phosphoric-acid-anodized 2024-T3 clad aluminum.
Use contexts

Applications

The product combines structural bonding performance, thixotropic gap filling and built-in bondline control for several prepared-assembly use contexts.

Prepared aluminum structural assembly configured for adhesive bonding
Prepared aluminum structural bonding
ASTM D1002 testing on phosphoric-acid-anodized 2024-T3 aluminum provides bonded-joint strength data from −55°C through 204°C. The room-temperature cure and controlled bondline are relevant where the tested metal preparation and joint configuration can be reproduced.
Assembly cavity prepared for epoxy potting or gap filling
Potting and cavity filling
The thixotropic paste and gap-filling capability support potting and filling where the uncured material must remain positioned before cure. Mixed quantity must remain within the 450 g limit to control exotherm.
Close-up of a liquid-shim bondline controlled by glass-bead spacers
Liquid shimming and gap compensation
The 5 mil glass beads help establish bondline thickness while the thixotropic paste fills localized gaps between properly prepared mating surfaces. Assembly support should remain in place through the handling-strength stage, and service loads should wait for full cure.
